I didn't find the main character, Michael Dane, very likable. In addition to being a thief and a con man who thinks he's a lot slicker than he really is, he's immature, volatile and makes stupid decisions. The story was decent but predictable, and I was glad when I had finished it, because I no longer had to read about Michael.

Interpreter for the Dead edition by David Lee Martin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review. I had a tough time following this one. It didn't flow right. One paragraph is told from the main character, Dane's point of view, then the next paragraph switches to someone else's point of view. That makes for a book that is hard to read. Many times as I was reading this I kept asking myself "what just happened?" I found myself going back and re-reading things to try to make it make sense to me. A little about the story Michael Dane has had a tough life - in and out of jail, theft. His parents have died. Does he have anyone? Well, yes he does. A childhood friend, AJ, that he becomes reacquainted with. Dane's father was murdered, or so Dane seems to think. He decides to tackle the task of finding out who killed him and why. As he digs deeper into his father's life, he finds out information and clues to help him along the way. Now I love murder mysteries, but another problem I had with this one was that there were all these pieces to the murder, but they didn't seem to fit together. I think the author had a little trouble with tying it all together. I do not recommend this book. On the plus side, it was a short read so I finished quickly so I could move onto a better, more engaging book.
The book starts out slowly, and (sorry to say) a bit boring. An elderly man, Henry Dane, living on his own in Colorado suffers from a heart attack and dies alone. The problem is the intro is poorly written and hardly the best setup for a mystery. The author doesn't put enough ominous tone into it, save for a gimmicky last sentence or two about Henry not tying up all loose ends. Instead, we're indirectly introduced to most of the main characters- Henry's son, Michael, a greedy real estate agent, Henry's doctor, Dr Hiram, and a neighbor/vet, AJ- via Henry's thoughts. But mostly the prologue is about Henry feeding the horses, Henry loving his dead dog, Henry having his heart attack.

Its really too bad, then, that the "mystery" takes almost 10 chapters to reveal itself. Though I got all the connections at the end, I was mad that the prologue was written as blandly as it was.

But this might be a beginner's mistake. The author does pick up in pace when writing about Michael Dane. Michael is the "anti-hero" with a criminal record; when we meet him, he's stealing cars and selling identities/stolen IDs. As you might expect, he messes with "people who deserve it" AKA the rich folks. And since this is the 21st century, Michael is a computer genius who can hack into any security system/password/etc. Yeah, he's a bit of a cliché but he's pretty funny and likeable. The author throws poor Michael into plenty of wacky situations, including an overlong chapter where he chases down a truck carrying his tainted urine sample while trying to fight off a sedative.

Somewhere in the mix, Michael solves the mystery of his father's death. Or rather, Michael stumbles upon pretty much every clue by accident, or after one of his unknown enemies attacks him. He's so distanced from his father that he almost does not want to dig into the past. His disconnect is the main reason for the lack of emotion in the book. While I did understand how, as a child, Michael would rebel against having to interpret/speak for his deaf parents, there's no full explanation for his extreme and very apparent hatred of his father. He also is quite emotionless towards the many deaf characters he encounters. Since this series appears to rely heavily on deafness, I am hoping in future books Michael will start to show some more heart and interest.

I'm rather overlong in my review so I will end by saying this is a good and I'm hoping a lot of the characters and plots get picked up in the series. As a mystery, this did have plenty of plot twists and false leads. Not quite an emotional book but still entertaining.

Note I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
Interpreter for the Dead was overall an enjoyable, quick read. A fine introduction to a new series of mysteries, despite being riddled with typos (far exceeding the 5 stated by another reviewer).

I enjoyed the author's accurate depiction of the region where I currently reside. He captured the scenery and the quirks of the residents quite accurately. The dependence upon the deaf community that sprung up around his parents' home and the deaf school was a unique element. Yet it was carried out with tact and balance. Despite my reservations I found I had no trouble rooting for the "bad guy" to come out on top. Key points of the plot were somewhat predictable, but I find that relatively common in this genre.

If you are a reader who finds typos and wrong words distracting you may wish to move along to a different book. If they do not bother you too much, this book is worth reading. I will likely give the next book of the series a read when it is released on the hopes that the editing has improved.

I love a good mystery and this one has all the right stuff. Reels you in and makes you want to keep reading until the end. Hope the next one comes out soon so we can see what Michael Dane has been up to!
Loved this book. I lived in the Denver metro area for 15 years and it provided just enough details to bring back great memories and create a picture in my mind of where people were in the story. The characters were very real and I found myself liking and disliking them just like real life. I can't wait to read more from this author, either in another book with the same characters or completely different characters.

Total steal of a deal for the .
liked the book want more interesting concept
