Munich, 1772
Sophie Rathenau hopes she’s escaped the Austrian Chancellor, even if the price is grappling with Bavarian drunks.
But when barmaid friend Leni asks her to trace a missing priest, it's the wrath of the Jesuit Order Sophie has to fear, not to mention a posse of turncoat officials and Balkan desperadoes.
Just as well she has someone to turn to, someone with whom she’d like to share more than confidences. But chief of police Luca may be the most arrogant man she’s ever met. Can Sophie trust him with the secrets of a renegade Order, unite Leni with the priest she’s fallen for, and save her own skin?

"Lay Brothers" is the second in a series of novels from the era of Mozart and Maria Theresia.

Lay Brothers Sophie Rathenau Vienna Mysteries Book 2 edition by David Neilson Literature Fiction eBooks

In seventeenth century Munich, Sophie is drawn into a web of lies, half-truths and secrets that are proving deadly to everyone around her, and require the utmost of her strength, courage and wit to survive. Once again, David Neilson has masterfully created a time and place that are vivid and real with his passionate attention to history, psychology, character and setting. Tension is introduced and played in an order who are exceeding their duties, a woman in forbidden love, a priest holding lethal knowledge and authorities who will manipulate everyone to gain the leverage that knowledge. Extraordinarily rich, Neilson's storytelling is compelling from beginning to end, and beyond, as I wait for the third novel about Sophie, Serene, due for release shortly. I can't recommend these novels highly enough - for readers who want to be immersed in history, to be challenged in keeping up with Sophie's piecing together of what is really going on - there are very few such elegant and powerful historical intrigue stories, and even fewer that are as well-written, as insightful and as moving as Neilson's.

Lay Brothers Sophie Rathenau Vienna Mysteries Book 2 edition by David Neilson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Lay Brothers is an inventive and ingenious juxtaposition of unlikely elements, and as you get pulled into the vivid and colorful depiction of 18th century Munich with its conglomeration of cultures, down to the minutest details of food, entertainment, and use of the vernacular, your thirst to know the answers to the mystery will be driven by the question what if it happened? A Jesuit priest, a beer hall worker, all the sights and sounds of a fascinating time and place that you missed out on actually living in, and a disappearance all coalesce in a tantalizing and truly unique story.

Brazen, calculating, unswervable, and loyally compassionate to both her friend and her flame, Sophie is a character who you will want to live through vicariously as she goes about her quest in a dark and seedy world. You will be drawn by her devotion, her courage, and her self-determination. Though a powerful female figure who is before her time who outwardly shows no signs of fear in the face of danger, abuse, and perfidy, Sophie is neither superhuman nor invincible but deeply affected by and perhaps constantly internalizing her experiences. I found her quest wholly sympathetic and her character undaunted. Nielsen's ability to maintain atmosphere subtly and effortlessly negates any danger of Sophie coming across as an anachronism.

The book was dialogue-heavy, but all-in-all well-balanced with plenty of detail, and I felt this paced it well as an action thriller. I could certainly see it unfold and imagine it on screen.
Set in exotic, wonderfully detailed "old world" Munich, "Lay Brothers" is a compelling story of tangled criminal, religious, and political intrigues, all driven by the ambitions and desires of its finely drawn cast of characters. Pulling everything together is Sophie, as irreducibly-complex as any great character should be, but still grounding the book with her irreverent spirit and indomitable attitude.
I very much enjoyed reading Lay Brothers. Story takes place in 1772 Munich and a female private investigator is not common for the era. You never know what will happen next. Sophie reminds me of a female Mike Hammer.
Sophie Rathenau doesn't need any more drama in her life, her job at a rowdy beer hall requires more than enough energy. But when the man her roommate is carrying a torch for—a man who happens to be a priest—disappears, she reluctantly agrees to investigate. The ensuing case takes her on twists and turns throughout late 1700s Munich. The unraveling of the mysteries in store make for great light reading which should please anyone that loves intricate plots or rich historical settings.

The aforementioned setting was perhaps my favorite part of the book, with engrossing and detailed descriptions of the architecture, clothing, and
manners of the era adding significant color. The character of Sophie as well was richly drawn and very fun to read; although by the end of the book Antonia and others were fighting for first place in my list of favorites.

In critique I will mention that keeping track of every character and locale can be difficult, so readers are advised to keep the cast of characters and map of Munich book-marked. A glossary at the end was also very helpful for figuring out unfamiliar germanic terms; so please be aware it's there from the beginning (and not, like me, fail to notice it until the end of the book!).

A recommended read!
